Long-Term Follow-Up
The short-term effects of obesity surgery
are well understood. However, there are still questions to be answered
about the long-term effects on the nutrition
and body systems of people who have had these surgeries. Nutritional
deficiencies that occur over the course of many years still need to
be studied. Over time, d periodic checks for anemia (low red blood cell
count) and Vitamin B12, folate and iron levels are required if you have
had these types of surgeries. Follow-up tests will initially be conducted
every three to six months or as needed, and then every one to two years.
It is also important for patients to know that there are support groups
available to them for their benefit.
